The regional wrestling tournament was held Friday and Saturday at Lee County High School. The format was a sixteen wrestler bracket, double elmination style with all wrestlers aiming to place in the top four. The Sanderson Spartans brought thirteen wresters into Lee County Friday afternoon. All the Spartans gave it a valiant effort but only four made it to the “Big Dance”. At 135 lbs. Blane McElreath captured the 3rd place spot after defeated fellow conference wrestler Winston Norton. Ian Clark won an overtime match in the consolation semi finals to advance to the state tourny. Both Philip Price and Tyree Linen stayed in the championship round and advanced to the finals. Both seniors fell to the top two wrestlers in the state in their respective weightclass. The remaining Spartans and coaches will travel to Greensboro Thursday afternoon for the North Carolina State Tournament. Four state qualifiers is the second most Jeremy Barefoot has had in his 9 years of coaching.
