Month: January 2013
The Cap 8 has been competitive as expected but no one would have expected matches this close this year. After falling to Millbrook 33-34 January 9th, the Spartans defeated Wakeforest-Rolesville 36-30 Tuesday night. WFRV also had a close encounter with Broughton high school earlier in the year 37-36. Sanderson’s individual winners were Adam DeRose, Pete Maierhofer, Alonzo Adams, Jonny Gomez, Ryan Rodriguez, Matt Norby, #7 Chris Grannan and Antwuan Elliot. The Spartans travel to Enloe high school next week for another Cap 8 match up.
Sanderson High wrestles Wake Forest-Rolesville Tuesday night at home in another rivalry match. The last two years the matches have been nail bitters and this year will prove no different. The Spartans come off an emotional high after falling short by one point to Millbrook high school two weeks prior. Wrestlers to watch in this match are Nick Mutio(106), Mitchell Goldbach (120), Jacob Williams(132), Nashid Barrow(138), Evan Brawner(160) and Brinson Allen(HWT) for Wakeforest-Rolesville. Sanderson wrestlers to watch are Adam DeRose(113), Jonny Gomez(145), Ryan Franz(160) and Chris Grannan(182). Wrestling starts at 7pm and weighins are at 6pm.
The Spartans placed 4th along with Panther Creek with 131 points and placed 5 wrestlers. Adam DeRose lost to state ranked Chance Davis(Apex) 4-6 in the finals. Jonny Gomez also fell to the number one ranked 3a 145 pounder from Orange County High School, Anderson Pope, 1-3. The Spartans wrestle Leesville high school on January 16th. Good Luck Spartans!
January 9th was the stage of one of the best Cap 8 Conference matches in years. The Millbrook wrestling team visited Sanderson in an attempt to end the reign of the Spartans the last two years. With “Two Times Too Many” on their minds the Wildcats might have done just that when they beat the Sanderson Spartans 34-33. The dual came down to the last match at the 220 pound weight class where Millbrook freshmen Hunter McClelland earned a 9-4 decision victory giving the Wildcats the 34-33 win. The Spartans take their talents to Leesville High next week for another classic and wrestle this weekend at the Knightdale Duals.
