The “Challenge”

Adam DeRose embarked on a journey that has seen him excel in multiple aspects of life.  Through the Eagle Scouts and through wrestling DeRose has gained both the knowledge and the physical prowess to achieve what no Scout has done before.

The “Challenge” is to pass part of the actual Seal Qualification Physical Selection Training (PST).  To start the PST, DeRose did a 15 mile hike up and down a Mountain. Next, he needed to complete a 500 yard swim under 9 minutes using a military sidestroke and military breast stroke (military is a variation that doesn’t make splashes/sound).  DeRose came in 2nd at 7.5 minutes.

Immediately after getting out of the pool, DeRose had 2 minutes to do 50 military push ups as well as 50 military sit ups under 2 min. He again came in first needing less than 25 sec to do them. Once done with these, DeRose’s next challenge was to  run over to the chin up bar and do 10 chin ups under 2 min.

The chin ups are knees bent at 90 degrees, ankles crossed, no swinging and chin must be 1 inch above the bar. DeRose again came in 1st, needing less than 15 seconds to do them.  The confident DeRose showed his lack of fatigue doing another 10 chin ups for what he called “fun”.

The last event was to be 1.5 mile jog under 10.5 min. Unfortunately, this event was postponed until tomorrow because of thunderstorms. Of the 22 Scouts that started, only 5 have past everything so far. Hopefully, they can do the run tomorrow and he will pass winning the Seal Challenge.

The True Reward

Adam DeRose and the other Scout who earn the award received advice from Captain Smith who was not only in Act of Valor with Chief Jackson  but Captain Smith also was the Navy producer for Actor Valor and several other movies. DeRose said the first time he saw Captain Smith, he said Smith had to be the real Captain America!

Next, he needed to complete a 500 yds swim under 9 min. using a military sidestroke and military breast stroke (military is a variation that doesn't make splashes/sound). He came in 2nd at 7.5 minutes (the kid that got 1st didn't complete any other event). Immediately after getting out of the pool, he had 2 minutes to do 50 military push ups (the head up and back perfectly straight, touch your chest to the ground). He came in 1st needing only 27 seconds to do them. After the push ups, flip over, and do 50 military sit ups under 2 min (knees up, arms crossed and hands on shoulder - touching your knee with your elbow). He again came in first needing less than 25 sec to do them. Once done with these, run over to the chin up bar and do 10 chin ups under 2 min.
