Head Coach: Jeremy Barefoot(2004-2014)

“The greatest pleasure in life is saying what others say you cannot do”

-Jeremy is going into his eleventh year as a head coach with three Conference Coach of the year awards under his belt. His teams have placed top three in the conference the past four years and continue to rise. Jeremy is married to Mallory Bass and they have a son named Seth Barefoot. Coach Barefoot believes in basic wrestling and foundation. He has 126 wins and continues to rise and, with the help of his assistants, build solid wrestlers and solid people. “Wrestle to win, Wrestle to pin!” Email: jbarefoot@wcpss.net

Kevin Manaher(2005-2012):

Manaher brought an old school approach to wrestling as well as a hard nosed style of wrestling.  His techniques were focused on top and bottom as well as great defense/counter defense.  His intensity on the sidelines added an extra intensity during matches and tournaments.  Manaher left the program in 2012.

Jonathan McCoy(2008-2013):

He brings a motivational talent that is unparalleled in the area. Coach McCoy does not yell or shout, his words bring a power of their own. Before every match and after every practice he gives the wrestlers something important to think about either about wrestling or life. McCoy’ s knowledge of wrestling is wide range and very useful when teaching defensive moves and shots.  Coach McCoy joined the team in 2008 and his impact has been felt since then.  Coach McCoy has been coaching for 21 years.  He will be coaching Offensive Line at Broughton High School next season.

Adam Barefoot(2008-2013):

Barefoot brings an off-brand type of wrestling to Sanderson High, combining technique and flexibility to win matches different types of ways. Tall in stature, Barefoot teaches his wrestlers the importance of leverage and technique and less pure strength. He also his very in tap with the area wrestlers and brings his knowledge to the mat to fully prepare the wrestlers. With a calm demeanor, Barefoot still has a fire that can often be seen during matches.

1983 State Championship

In 1983 Sanderson won the State tournament when it was a single classification open championship at the time (4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A combined).  Jay Stainback finished in 1st place at 170 and Greg Zwilling finished in 1st place at 198.  Sanderson finished four team points ahead of second place Plymouth.  This is Sanderson’s only wrestling championship since the school opened in the late 60’s.

Hall of Fame(Pre-Barefoot Era)

David Cooke(Inducted in the Sanderson High Hall of Fame in 2011)–

(SHS Class of 1978) attended Sanderson for two years after his family moved to Raleigh from the suburbs of Chicago. He was an outstanding wrestler, becoming Sanderson’s first-ever NCHSAA wrestling champion, going undefeated in 1977 while competing in the 105 pound weight class when the team was under the direction of Coach Chuck Lehning. The following year, with Coach Dale Warren starting an eight year run at the helm for the Spartans, Cooke was the runner up in the NCHSAA tournament. The loss in the 1978 state finals was one of only two he suffered in the two years he wrestled for the Spartans.  David also wrestled for club teams in state and national tournaments during his high school years. Representing NC in Olympic-style USA Wrestling tournaments, he won second place in the nation in Greco-Roman in 1977, third place in 1978, and fifth place in the Freestyle event in 1978.  After graduating from Sanderson, David took his academic and athletics talents to UNC- Chapel Hill where he had a distinguished wrestling career – winning over 80% of his matches over four seasons. He was a three time ACC Champion (1980, 1981, 1982 – all at 126 pounds) and a two time All-American (1981, 1982). He was the runner up in NCAA tournament at 126 pounds in 1981 and finished seventh in 1982. He was a captain of the team at UNC in 1981 and 1982. He finished fourth in freestyle at the 1981 World University Games held in Bucharest, Romania. He was included among the “Top 50 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestlers of All Time” selected at the time of the conference’s 50th Anniversary celebration held in 2002.

Rick Donnalley(Inducted in the Sanderson High Hall of Fame in 2011)– wrestled for three seasons, two of them in the heavyweight class, where he usually faced athletes much heavier than him.  As a junior and senior he was the Cap Eight champion in the heavyweight class.  As a senior he achieved a record of 18-1 in route to a third place finish in the NCHSAA Sectional Tournament.  Rick was named Sanderson’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year for 1976-1977.
